What the ULEZ is

The Ultra Low Emission Zone covers all of Greater London. TfL says it operates 24 hours a day, every day of the year except Christmas Day, and that a vehicle which doesn't meet the standard pays a £12.50 daily charge to drive in the zone (source: tfl.gov.uk, Ultra Low Emission Zone).

The charge applies per day you drive, not per trip. A car that's used for a short run to the shops every day costs the same as one driven all day.

Which cars don't comply

TfL sets the standard by emissions, not age. Cars need to meet Euro 4 for petrol or Euro 6 for diesel. As a guide, TfL says compliant petrol cars are generally those first registered as new after 2005, and compliant diesel cars are generally those first registered after September 2015 (source: tfl.gov.uk, ULEZ standards for cars).

Because it's based on declared emissions, some older cars comply and some newer ones don't. Put your reg into TfL's vehicle checker before deciding anything.

Your options

  • Keep the car and pay the daily charge on the days you drive it in the zone.
  • Keep it, but only drive it outside London.
  • Sell it. Non-compliant cars are worth less to London buyers but still have a market outside London and in the trade.

If you're mostly driving inside the zone, the charge adds up quickly over a year. That's the most common reason people sell to us.

How we price a non-compliant car

We look at the same things as any car: make, model, mileage, service history and condition. Non-compliance lowers the value for London buyers, and we're open about that. A well-kept older diesel with a full history can still be worth selling. Tell us about any faults, warning lights or MOT advisories and we'll factor them in, so the price we agree is the price you're paid.

Vans and the ULEZ

Diesel vans need to meet Euro 6 too. If you're a sole trader with an older van, see our page on selling a van in London, which covers VAT and finance as well.

Four steps

How it works

  1. Step 1: Get your valuation

Enter your reg and mileage, then check the car's details. It takes about a minute.

  2. Step 2: We confirm your offer

Someone on our team looks over the details and confirms a price with you before anyone travels.

  3. Step 3: We collect from you

Pick a time. We come to your home, your work or wherever the car is parked.

  4. Step 4: Get paid

We check the car matches what you told us, you sign the paperwork, and we pay you the agreed price.

Questions

Non-ULEZ car questions

How do I check if my car is ULEZ compliant?

Enter your registration on TfL's vehicle checker. It tells you whether you need to pay.

Will you buy a car that doesn't meet ULEZ?

Yes. We buy compliant and non-compliant cars. Non-compliance affects the price, but not whether we'll buy.

Is the ULEZ charge per day or per journey?

Per day. TfL charges once for each day you drive in the zone, whatever the number of trips.

Do you buy older diesel vans as well?

Yes. See our van page for details.
