Scrap price or car price?
Scrap yards mostly pay by weight and the going rate for metal. That's fair for a car that's truly finished. It ignores the rest, though: working parts, alloy wheels, a decent interior, the catalytic converter, or a fault that turns out to be a cheap repair.
We value the car as a car first. If it can be repaired or its parts reused, that usually beats a scrap price. If it really is scrap, we'll be straight with you.
The law on scrapping
A car that's scrapped has to be broken up at an Authorised Treatment Facility (ATF). The ATF gives you a Certificate of Destruction, which proves the car was disposed of properly and that you're no longer responsible for it.
Under the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013, scrap dealers in England and Wales can't pay cash for vehicles. Payment has to be by bank transfer or cheque. If someone offers you cash for a scrap car, walk away.
What you'll need
- The V5C logbook, so the DVLA can be told.
- Photo ID in the same name as the V5C.
- The keys, if you still have them.
- Your private plate moved off first, if you want to keep it.

Is my car worth more than scrap?
Often. If it has usable parts or a fixable fault, it's usually worth more as a car. Get a valuation first.
Can I get cash for a scrap car?
Not legally from a scrap dealer in England and Wales. The Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013 bans cash payments for scrap vehicles.
Will I get a Certificate of Destruction?
Only if the car is scrapped, because the ATF issues it. If the car is sold on or repaired, the normal DVLA change of keeper process applies.
What about my road tax?
Once the DVLA knows the car has been sold or scrapped, you get a refund for any full months left.
