Yes, you can sell a car without an MOT

There's no law against it. What you can't do is drive it on a public road, unless you're going to a booked MOT test or to a garage for repairs needed to pass. That's why owners get stuck. The car can't be used, it's hard to show to private buyers, and the repairs may not be worth it.

We buy cars with expired MOTs and recent fails. If it can't be driven legally, we bring a transporter.

Fix it or sell it?

Read the fail sheet. A bulb, a wiper blade or a number plate light costs very little to sort, so do it. Rust on structural parts, worn suspension or an emissions fail can run to hundreds or thousands of pounds.

A quick test: compare the repair quote with the difference between the car's value with an MOT and without. If the repair costs more, sell it as it is. We'll give you a figure to compare against.

Look up the MOT history

Every MOT since 2005 is on GOV.UK. Put in the reg and you'll see passes, fails, advisories and the mileage at each test. It helps us price the car, though we can look it up ourselves.

Tax and parking rules

You can't tax a car that needs an MOT and hasn't got one. An untaxed car must be declared off the road (SORN) and kept on private land, such as a driveway or garage, not the street. If you don't have off-street parking in London, that's usually the reason to sell quickly.

Four steps

How it works

  1. Step 1: Get your valuation

Enter your reg and mileage, then check the car's details. It takes about a minute.

  2. Step 2: We confirm your offer

Someone on our team looks over the details and confirms a price with you before anyone travels.

  3. Step 3: We collect from you

Pick a time. We come to your home, your work or wherever the car is parked.

  4. Step 4: Get paid

We check the car matches what you told us, you sign the paperwork, and we pay you the agreed price.

Questions

MOT questions

Is it legal to sell a car with no MOT?

Yes. You just can't drive it on the road unless it's to a booked test or repair.

How much does a missing MOT knock off?

It depends what's likely to fail. A minor issue costs little. Rust or emissions problems cost more. We price the car as it is.

Should I MOT it before selling?

Only if you think it'll pass with little work. If you already have a fail sheet with big items, sell it as it is.

It's untaxed and on the street. Can you move it?

Yes. Tell us where it is and we'll collect it so it's off the road.
