Who owns the car?

On hire purchase (HP) and personal contract purchase (PCP), the finance company owns the car until the last payment is made. So you can't sell it and keep the money. The agreement has to be paid off as part of the sale. It's very common and doesn't need to be complicated.

Step by step

  • Ask your lender for a settlement figure. Most show it in your online account, or you can phone them.
  • Get a valuation from us for the car.
  • Compare the two. If our price is higher, the difference is yours. If it's lower, you'd need to cover the gap.
  • Tell us about the finance when you ask for a valuation, and we'll explain how the settlement is handled on the day.

If you owe more than it's worth

That's called negative equity. To sell, you'd need to pay the shortfall so the lender gets the full settlement amount. We'll show you the numbers before anything is agreed.

On PCP, your agreement has a guaranteed future value (the balloon payment). Near the end of the term, compare our figure with that number before choosing whether to sell, hand the car back or pay the balloon.

Voluntary termination

If you've paid at least half the total amount payable on a regulated HP or PCP agreement, you may have a legal right to hand the car back and walk away. This is called voluntary termination. It can be the better option when you're in negative equity. Our guide to selling a car on finance goes through it.

Logbook loans

If the car is security for a logbook loan (a bill of sale), that lender has a claim on it too, and the loan has to be cleared. Mention it when you contact us.

Four steps

How it works

  1. Step 1: Get your valuation

Enter your reg and mileage, then check the car's details. It takes about a minute.

  2. Step 2: We confirm your offer

Someone on our team looks over the details and confirms a price with you before anyone travels.

  3. Step 3: We collect from you

Pick a time. We come to your home, your work or wherever the car is parked.

  4. Step 4: Get paid

We check the car matches what you told us, you sign the paperwork, and we pay you the agreed price.

Questions

Finance FAQs

Can I sell my car if there's finance on it?

Yes. The finance must be paid off as part of the sale. Tell us about it up front and we'll explain how it works.

Where do I get a settlement figure?

From your finance company, usually in your online account or by phone. It's only valid for a few days, so get a fresh one close to the sale.

What if the car is worth less than I owe?

You'd need to pay the difference to complete the sale. We'll show you the figures first.

Will a buyer find out about the finance?

Yes. Outstanding finance shows on vehicle history checks, so always mention it.
