Sell your car without a logbook
A missing V5C doesn't have to stop the sale. With photo ID and a few checks we can often go ahead. Enter your reg to start.
- We come to you, at home or at work

Getting a replacement V5C
If you're the registered keeper, you can apply for a replacement online. GOV.UK says the service usually costs £25 and that you'll usually receive the new V5C by post within 5 to 7 working days. You'll need the registration number, the VIN or chassis number, and the name and postcode on the V5C. You can also apply by phone if you're the registered keeper and none of your details have changed (source: gov.uk, Get a vehicle log book (V5C)).
If your details have changed, you'll need to apply by post, which takes longer.
Selling before the new one arrives
The V5C shows who the registered keeper is. It isn't proof of ownership, so you can sell without it. To go ahead, we'll usually need:
- photo ID and proof of address that match the DVLA's record for the car
- the VIN, which we check against the car and the DVLA record
- anything else in your name: a purchase receipt, finance paperwork, insurance documents or service invoices
We also run the normal checks for finance, theft and write-off markers. If everything matches, we can carry on as usual.
Telling the DVLA
The DVLA's online 'sold a vehicle' service needs the 11-digit reference number from the V5C. Without it, you write to the DVLA with the registration, make, model, date of sale and the buyer's details. The current postal address is on GOV.UK. Keep a copy of your letter.
When a missing V5C is a bigger problem
If the car isn't registered to you, for example you bought it without a V5C or it belongs to a relative, the registered keeper needs to be involved or to give you written permission to sell. Tell us the situation when you ask for a valuation and we'll explain what's needed.
How it works
Step 1: Get your valuation
Enter your reg and mileage, then check the car's details. It takes about a minute.
Step 2: We confirm your offer
Someone on our team looks over the details and confirms a price with you before anyone travels.
Step 3: We collect from you
Pick a time. We come to your home, your work or wherever the car is parked.
Step 4: Get paid
We check the car matches what you told us, you sign the paperwork, and we pay you the agreed price.
