What affects the value of a used EV

  • Battery health. The range at a full charge is the simplest guide. On a Nissan Leaf, the capacity bars on the dashboard tell a buyer a lot.
  • Battery size and version, for example Standard Range or Long Range.
  • Charging cables. Both the home cable and the Type 2 public charging cable should be with the car.
  • Tyres and wheels. EVs are heavy, so tyres wear quickly and buyers check them.
  • Software and paid upgrades, such as driver assistance packages bought for the car.

Changes to the Congestion Charge for electric cars

Electric cars used to be fully exempt from the London Congestion Charge. TfL says the 100% Cleaner Vehicle Discount has ended. From 2 January 2026, electric cars get a 25% discount and electric vans get 50%, but only if the vehicle is registered with Auto Pay. TfL also says that from 4 March 2030 the discount is due to fall to 12.5% for electric cars and 25% for electric vans (source: tfl.gov.uk, Congestion Charge discounts and exemptions).

If you used to drive into central London for free and now pay most of the charge, that may change whether an EV still suits you. Electric cars still meet the ULEZ standard.

Vehicle tax on electric cars

Electric cars now pay vehicle tax, and more expensive ones can pay an extra supplement. The rates and the list price threshold are on GOV.UK's vehicle tax rate tables. Check your own car's position before you decide.

Before you sell

Remove the car from the manufacturer's app and your account, delete any phone keys and reset the infotainment system. Keep your home wall charger: it belongs to your property, not the car. Include the portable charging cable and any adaptors that came with the car.

Four steps

How it works

  1. Step 1: Get your valuation

Enter your reg and mileage, then check the car's details. It takes about a minute.

  2. Step 2: We confirm your offer

Someone on our team looks over the details and confirms a price with you before anyone travels.

  3. Step 3: We collect from you

Pick a time. We come to your home, your work or wherever the car is parked.

  4. Step 4: Get paid

We check the car matches what you told us, you sign the paperwork, and we pay you the agreed price.
