What the categories mean

GOV.UK sets out four insurance write-off categories (source: gov.uk, Insurance write-offs):

  • Category A: cannot be repaired. The entire vehicle has to be crushed.
  • Category B: cannot be repaired. The body shell has to be crushed, but other parts can be salvaged.
  • Category S: can be repaired following structural damage. The vehicle can be used again if it's repaired to a roadworthy condition.
  • Category N: can be repaired following non-structural damage. The vehicle can be used again if it's repaired to a roadworthy condition.

We buy Cat S and Cat N cars. Category A and B vehicles can't go back on the road, so please tell us if yours is one of those.

Your responsibilities

GOV.UK says you must tell the DVLA when your vehicle has been written off, and that you can be fined £1,000 if you don't. When you sell, you need to tell the buyer the write-off category. It's on the vehicle's record and shows on history checks, so being upfront saves time and keeps the price you agree.

Repaired or unrepaired

If the car has been repaired, send us the repair invoices and photos of the finished work. A proper repair by a recognised body shop helps the price. If it hasn't been repaired, send photos of the damage from a few angles, say whether it drives, and tell us which warning lights are on and whether any airbags went off.

Either way, we'll value the car as it is. If it can't be driven, we'll bring a transporter.

How the category affects value

A write-off marker lowers the value compared with the same car without one, and Category S usually more than Category N because the damage was structural. How much depends on the car, the quality of any repair and its general condition. We'll give you a straight figure.

Four steps

How it works

  1. Step 1: Get your valuation

Enter your reg and mileage, then check the car's details. It takes about a minute.

  2. Step 2: We confirm your offer

Someone on our team looks over the details and confirms a price with you before anyone travels.

  3. Step 3: We collect from you

Pick a time. We come to your home, your work or wherever the car is parked.

  4. Step 4: Get paid

We check the car matches what you told us, you sign the paperwork, and we pay you the agreed price.

Questions
